Chocolate Chip Cookies

The chocolate chip cookie, a beloved classic in the world of baking, has a delectable history dating back to the 1930s. It was Ruth Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, who stumbled upon this iconic creation when she chopped up a chocolate bar and added it to her cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt entirely. To her surprise, the chocolate remained in delightful morsels, giving birth to the very first chocolate chip cookie. Nestlé eventually partnered with Wakefield, and the now-famous Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips were born, with the original recipe printed on the package. This chance discovery became a staple in American homes, and the warm, chewy, and chocolate-studded delight we know and love today.

Ingredients:

½ cup Butter or margarine (room temperature)

¼ cup Light brown sugar (packed)

¼ cup Granulated sugar

1 large Egg (room temperature)

½ tsp Vanilla extract

1 ¼ cups All-purpose flour

¼ tsp Baking soda

¼ tsp Baking powder

1 cup Chocolate chips or chunks

Directions:

Step 1:

In a mixing bowl, combine the butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Beat them together until the mixture is creamy and well combined.

Step 2:

Add the egg and vanilla extract to the mixture and mix until they are fully incorporated.

Step 3:

Incorporate the dry ingredients by sifting the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and baking powder into the bowl. Mix until the dry ingredients are thoroughly combined with the wet ingredients.

Step 4:

Add the chocolate chips or chunks to the dough and mix until they are evenly distributed. You can use a mix of chocolate chips and chunks for variety.

Step 5:

At this point, you have two options: You can bake the cookies immediately, or for even better flavor and texture, chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Chilling the dough allows the flavors to meld and helps create a chewier texture.

Step 6:

Once the dough is ready preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F) while the dough is chilling. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 7:

Shape the dough into evenly-sized balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2-3 inches of space between each ball. If desired, press a few extra chocolate chips or chunks onto the tops of the dough balls for a delightful visual touch.

Step 8:

Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. Look for a light browning on the edges while keeping the center slightly soft to the touch. This ensures your cookies are perfectly chewy on the inside.

Step 9:

After baking, allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheets for 3 minutes to firm up a bit. Then, transfer them to wire racks to cool completely. This helps them maintain their texture and prevents overcooking.

Additional Tips:

  • For an extra flavor twist, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of espresso powder to the dough.

  • Don't skip the step of chilling the dough if you can. It greatly enhances the texture and flavor of your cookies.

  • Experiment with different types of chocolate chips or chunks, such as dark chocolate, white chocolate, or even butterscotch chips for unique flavor profiles.
